Accreditation Validates Liberty Mutual’s Commitment to Quality Service

Liberty Mutual initially obtained Workers’ Compensation Utilization Management accreditation in 1996 and has maintained it ever since, having just received reaccreditation through 2024. Earning accreditation demonstrates its core values to advocate for people by putting them first and to “act responsibly” in helping injured workers return to work safely and when medically appropriate.
One of the benefits of attaining URAC accreditation is that Liberty Mutual “can prove to external entities that our Utilization Review department maintains a high level of quality and excellence,” explains Tammy Copeland, R.N., Compliance & Accreditation Analyst for Liberty Mutual’s Workers’ Compensation Claims – Utilization Management Program.
“This adds to process improvements, eliminates inefficiencies and improves patients/injured workers outcomes,” noted Copeland.
Ensuring Best Practices and Regulatory Compliance
Accreditation requires that organizations meet URAC’s 40 core operational standards as well as specific standards for screenings, clinical reviews, decision timeframes and appeals. Other key areas for workers’ compensation accreditation revolve around clinical staff credentialing, oversight and training and validation of reviewer qualifications. “By verifying nurse licensure, we ensure all of our licensed nurses continue to hold active and valid nurse license” Copeland explains.
URAC also requires organizations to review their policies and procedures annually, which has helped Liberty Mutual maintain best practices in workers’ compensation review and management.

Since workers’ compensation is regulated at the state level, employer obligations and benefits vary by state. Copeland credits the accreditation process in helping Liberty Mutual track and adhere to applicable state mandated regulations, explaining that URAC accreditation, or a similar accreditation, is required to receive approval from some states to conduct workers’ compensation utilization review. URAC is currently named as a designated accreditor of workers’ compensation utilization review in eight states of those states and the District of Columbia.
She expressed appreciation that URAC staff were “available to assist with questions during the accreditation process and between the re-accreditation process” and advises other organizations pursuing accreditation to take advantage of URAC’s on-demand trainings. “This was very beneficial to me during my first accreditation process and with standard revisions,” Copeland stated.
